Stories

At first I mistyped the word above as "Sorries".

Art

When we bought Blueland House the wall you see when you look in through the large front window was completely covered with a wallpaper mural of the Carpathian Alps, with a soviet tractor lower left and a hydro-electic power plant lower right. (The ancestory of the previous owners was Romanian.) This mural was removed when the interior of the downstairs was repainted.

Several years later, after Tanis moved out, the wall gradually came to appear naked. Early one summer I considered renting a big picture from the K-W Art Gallery, to dress it. Browsing the collection of rentable art I found a big picture (about four feet square) by Ross Sowdon, which showed a young woman who had fallen asleep while reading and snacking in a large wicker chair. It reminded me, not figuratively but thematically, of a future Jemima. It was, however, not for rent, so I bought it, and hung it on that wall with a halogen gallery light shining on it.

As the summer went on I noticed that passers by on the sidewalk often lingered a minute or two in front of the house, looking at the picture. Then, one cold fall evening there was a knock at the door; a well-dressed elderly man, no doubt younger than I am now, said he had gotten cold while taking a walk, "Could he come inside and look at the picture while he warmed up." Of course he could; for ten minutes he sat on a chesterfield communing with the picture. He then thanked me, saying he had warmed up and could complete his walk with ease. I thought I might see him again, but to my knowledge have not.

Most likely I will leave that picture behind when I leave Blueland House. Wherever I will be going it's unlikely there will be such a good place for hanging it.
