In an effort to make sure that Taprats is a solid, platform-independent
piece of Java code, I have run it on a variety of hardware/OS/VM combinations.
If you have a similar setup, this might give you some idea of whether
Taprats will behave correctly for you. Or maybe not -- sometimes these
incompatibilities are truly ineffable.
- Pentium III PC, RedHat Linux 6.1, Blackdown JDK 1.1.7v3 for glibc
- This was my native development platform, so everything should work
exactly as I had intended. Taprats runs both as a standalone
Java application and as an applet. It runs equally well in
JDK's appletviewer as directly from the command line.
- Pentium III PC, RedHat Linux 6.1, Netscape Communicator 4.72
- I don't know about you, but Netscape on my Linux machine is pretty
unstable. I get crashes all the time for inexplicable reasons.
So if the browser crashes while running the applet, it doesn't
surprise me at all. That said, I did get Taprats running fine in
Netscape, although the browser got stuck when I closed the web page
containing the main applet window without first closing all the
editor windows.
- Sun Ultra 1, Solaris 2.5.1, Sun JDK 1.2.2
- The applet works fine here. It's a bit slower (probably just because
my Sun machine is only 170MHz), but still tolerable. Most annoying
is the fact that Motif doesn't seem to be set up correctly, so all
windows have that garish Motif blue background.
- Pentium III PC, Windows NT 4.0, Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0
- You know, I've always been pretty happy with Microsoft's Java VM.
And sure enough, I encountered no problems with Taprats under IE.
I would say that this is overall the fastest and most stable
platform from which to run Taprats. Note that this is also
the fastest and most powerful machine on which I tested, so
take my recommendation with a grain of salt.
- Pentium III PC, Windows NT 4.0, Netscape Communicator 4.6
- Taprats works fine, although I get a similar problem to Linux
Netscape -- when I close the window containing the applet, the
browser gets stuck. I don't think the problem can be in my applet;
I don't leave any threads lying around, so closing the window should
just stop my applet from doing anything.
- Macintosh
- There was a time, many years ago, when I worked on Macs on a
regular basis. Believe it or not, that was before the web.
Those Macs didn't have internet connections at all! I'm not
altogether familiar with running modern internet software on
Macs, and I don't have ready access to Mac to try. I've had
varying reports. One person tells me that on a G4, Taprats
runs fine under IE and not at all under Netscape. That's the
most I can tell you right now.
