• My small collection of ice cream scoops.

  

  • The one on the far left was a present from my sister. It moo's when you pick it up.
  • The second one from the left was a present from the members of the graphics lab. Click on it and hear it talk! I often use it to alert the lab when the ice cream is ready.
  • You squeeze the handle of third and fourth ones to pop out the ice cream. The third from the left was a gift from my younger sister, while the fourth from the left was my very first ice cream scoop. It was a graduation present from my friends Josephine and Jeff.
  • The horizontal scoop on the left was a Christmas present. It's a Baskin-Robbins ice cream scoop. You press a button on the back of the scoop to pop out the ice cream. This one works the best.
  • The big, white one in the middle one is a plastic ice cream spade. It's useful for transferring the soft ice cream from the maker to another container that's more appropriate for hard freezing (something I rarely do).
  • The next three are filled with anti-freeze to help transfer the heat of your hand down to the scoop to help the ice cream slide out of the scoop.
  • The one below the anti-freeze scoops is a metal scoop with a plastic handle (presumably to keep your hand warm).
  • The scoop on the far right is a metal ice cream spade, for extracting large scoops from hard ice cream.

• Sometime in April 1995, an awkardly worded reference to my log of flavors was made in the useless web pages. Time has passed, and the entry was retired to the food subpage , and later to the Retired Useless Food WWW Pages. And even more time passed, and the useless web page site itself retired. Or perhaps it renamed itself. A web search certainly turns several useless web page sites.

  In case you're wondering, Rob Leitman, (at the time a grad student in my department) submitted the page.

• At the bottom of page 3 of the May 19, 1995 issue of the Imprint (Vol. 18, No 2) is a picture of members of the CGL lab at the reopening of Scoops, the ice cream counter in the Student Life Building.

  

  That's me in the middle, staring with such intensity at the ice cream cone. Actually, I'm either staring at the photographer, or (since I was treating the lab that day) I'm trying to keep track of how many ice cream cones had been served.

  From left to right, we have Julie Waterhouse, Andrew Park, Leith Chan (hiding behind Andrew), Ed Dangler, me, Rob Kroeger (hiding behind me), Ian Bell (hiding in darkness) and Eric Davies (I do not know the server's name).

• Check out The Lighter Side of Personal Computing in the July, 1995 issue (Vol. 14, No, 13) of PC Magazine. There is a blurb on the Useless Web pages (mentioned above), and one of the items mentioned is my list of flavors.

  In 1995, I requested permission to scan the relevant portion of the article and post it in my web-page, but they never replied to my request.

  In April, 1997, I re-requested permission. This time they promptly answered me (by email) and granted me permission to post the article -- for a fee of $150 for 1 year. I didn't feel like paying to advertise PC Magazine, so you'll have to go to the library if you want to see the article (it's not that exciting, though).

• On July 8, 1997, the University of Waterloo Daily Bulletin had the following to say:

  Chocolate almond, chocolate macadamia nut, chocolate peanut butter, grapefruit, maple blueberry, easy vanilla -- and the Ice Cream Hall of Shame. They're all features of this page created by Stephen Mann because, he explains simply enough, the computer graphics lab has an ice cream machine, "and I started making ice cream about the time the web came into existence":

  Initially, I kept an ASCII log of the flavors I made, and a list of recipes that I had tried. Eventually, I moved this on to the web to give people in the lab access to the recipes. Then it grew a bit from there. The page has been visited 9200 time in a little over a year by non-CGL people. And I get about 2-3 Ice Cream related email messages a week.

  Who would have thought there was so much about a cold treat to be found on a hot technology? Mann has links to dozens of ice cream pages on other computers around the world, ranging from "Bailey's Irish Cream Chocolate Chunk Ice Cream" to what looks like a nearly definitive ice cream page at the University of Guelph.

• The July 22, 1998 Montreal Gazette had an article by David Zgodzinski about ice cream web pages. Here's what he had to say about mine:

  The Ice Cream Page is the effort of Stephen Mann, a professor of computer graphics at the University of Waterloo.

  Mann has created a graphically dull, but information rich site (www.cgl.uwaterloo.ca/~smann/IceCream) about ice cream. The site has a section of recipes for various intriguing flavorus. There is a discussion of some popular ice-cream-making machines.

  Mann has done a thorough job of reviewing ice cream books. The books are classified under the broad headings - history, recipes, and business. His reviews are laconic but seem authoritative. The site also has a comprehensive page of lines to other ice-cream Web sites.

  The graphics have improved a bit since that article (but not much), and I continue to add information.

• On August, 13, 2011, The Record had an article about my ice cream making. This article also appeared in The Guelph Mercury, The Spec and possibly The Thunder Bay The Chronical Journal. And the article was mentioned in UW CSE News.
