Longqingxia

Longqinxia is a section of river winding through towering rocks. It has the nicknames "Small Guilin" and "Small Three Gorges," but not having seen either, I can't comment on it.

What I can say is that this is the commercialization of a beautiful natural sight. You arrive at the base of a dam, and take an escalater to the top. Only the escalater is inside of a dragon - you enter through the dragon's mouth. I hate to think where we exited...

At the top is a dock crammed full of people. There are big boats and small boats that come to pick people up. We took a small boat. The boat guide describes the made-up names for some of the rock formations, etc., in Mandarin (presumably few Big Noses come this way).

They let you off at a place you can climb to the top. Above the river at this place is a trapeze used to entertain the tourists. The climb is a bit rough: It's steep, no stairs (hurray!), unpaved, etc. But you get a wonderful view of the bend in the river below.

Despite all the tacky tourist trappings, the scenery is spectacular. Alas, that means most of my pictures are on slides, which I don't have a scanner for.
