Flower Pot Island

Up Next
Flower Pot Island is a small island near Tobermory. It's most interesting feature are it's two rock pillars known as the small and big flower pots. There are two tour boat companies (Blue Herron and Sea View) that offer cruises to the island. Both charge extra to get off at the island, but both have "early bird specials" (leaving at 9:00) that don't charge extra for getting off at the island. We arbitrarily took the Sea View early bird special, and feel it was the right choice for two reasons. First, the early bird trip has very few people on it, and second, the Sea View gets to the island shortly before the Blue Herron, giving you more time to look at the flower pots, etc., with fewer people around. Oh, yeah, the boats are glass bottom boats, and they take you to see two ship wrecks. However, the wrecks are close to the surface and we could see them without looking through the glass panels in the bottom of the boats.

On the island, there are three sights: the flower pots, the cave, and the light house. In our opinion, the rock formations on the shore are also a sight, and while it's well worth going to see the flower pots and the shore, we didn't find the cave or the light house of particular interest. If you like to hike, the loop taking you to see all three is a reasonable short hike.
