Modelling

Graphics is about recreating real life in a virtual world. It involves modelling objects, lighting them up, making them move.
  • Below is a series of images showing how a simple dog puppet (inspired by a real dog named Theodore) is modelled.
    • Start with simple shapes such as spheres or cubes. This dog is made out of spheres. Scale the sphere to an oval shape to make the dog's body.

    • Each new body part is defined relative to a previous body part. Building up a model hierarchically is usually simpler, similar to making something out of clay.

    • The final dog model has all the details added on, but something is missing.

    • We need to give it colour to make it come to life.

    • Note how the body and nose are both black, but the nose is shiny while the body is matte. Colours can be given different properties such as shininess, reflectiveness and so on.
