Colour and Attention, aka Cognitive Properties of Colour

Colour does two things

1. segregates (possible?) perceptual objects
2. directs attention

Two kinds of effects

1. Find a predetermined colour
2. Find a different colour

Results

Colour relationships prime form judgements, but not vice versa.

Interpretation

Either

• colour information is available sooner than form information, or
• colour processing is automatic while form information is voluntary

The ability to segregate input based on shape seems to argue for the former

• Remember that this ability is limited
• okay for simple shapes but not for complex ones
