CS781 - Colour for Computer Graphics - Winter 2009
Lecture 24
Colour and Attention, aka Cognitive Properties of Colour
Colour does two things
- segregates (possible?) perceptual objects
- directs attention
Two kinds of effects
- Find a predetermined colour
- Find a different colour
Interaction of Colour with Form
Posner
Idea of redundancy
Results
Colour relationships prime form judgements, but not vice versa.
Interpretation
Either
- colour information is available sooner than form information, or
- colour processing is automatic while form information is voluntary
The ability to segregate input based on shape seems to argue for the
former
- Remember that this ability is limited
- okay for simple shapes but not for complex ones
How Fast is Colour Processing?
Stroop Effect
Basic
Only one letter coloured
- More evidence of object parsing
